Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) is an energy storage technology that pumps water to an upper reservoir during periods of excess electricity and generates power during peak demand hours.
This system functions as a “giant energy battery” for the nation, helping stabilize the power grid and maximize the efficiency of renewable energy sources.
Within a pumped storage hydropower plant, the pressure pipeline (penstock) is regarded as the “heart” of the system, conveying water under extremely high pressure from the upper reservoir to the turbines. For this reason, the technical requirements for design, fabrication, and weld quality are exceptionally stringent. Lilama 10 is honored to undertake the fabrication of pumped storage hydropower penstocks for export to Australia.
What methods did Lilama 10 apply to manufacture pumped storage hydropower penstocks for export to Australia?
In this project, Lilama 10 implemented a fully integrated system of advanced welding procedures and non-destructive testing (NDT/TOFD), ensuring that every weld achieves outstanding tightness and mechanical strength.
All penstocks underwent post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) in dedicated furnaces, with precise temperature control throughout the entire cycle to effectively relieve residual stresses.
The entire production, inspection, and acceptance process strictly complied with European standard EN 15626:2018 (Level 1), in combination with ISO 11666:2018 and ISO 23279:2017, under the direct supervision of three European experts (ATB, FGJV, SHL).

A closed-loop production process: structural fabrication – welding – shot blasting – painting – installation, ensuring consistent quality and optimized project schedules.
