Stainless Steel Investment Casting (Lost Wax Casting) for Medical Components |Kobayashi Casting
Technology / product information
In modern healthcare, every metal component—even one only a few millimeters in size—can directly affect the safety, durability, and performance of medical devices.
With its high dimensional accuracy, smooth surface finish, and ability to reproduce complex geometries, stainless steel investment casting (lost wax casting) has become a widely adopted manufacturing method for implant components and high-precision medical devices.
1. Stainless Steel Cast Components in the Medical Industry
Where purity, precision, and absolute stability converge
Medical casting applications cover a wide range of products, including:
Implant components: bone screws, artificial joints, dental implant posts, surgical positioning pins
Medical device parts: micro pressure valves, flow control components, connectors, surgical instrument handles
Structural parts and housings for diagnostic equipment, measuring devices, and robotic medical systems
What these products have in common is that they demand performance levels far beyond standard mechanical components.
Geometric accuracy and surface quality
Tight dimensional tolerances of ±0.02–0.05 mm
Uniform, defect-free surfaces with no porosity or casting marks, especially in areas contacting tissue or medical fluids
Surface roughness of Ra 0.2–0.4 µm after electropolishing
Biocompatible material requirements
Commonly used materials include SCS13 / SCS14 stainless steel (equivalent to SUS304 / SUS316L), offering excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility
SCS14 (SUS316L) is particularly preferred for implants and laboratory equipment due to its molybdenum (Mo) content, which enhances resistance to pitting and ensures stability in mildly acidic or saline environments
Material purity and microstructure control
Strict control of alloy composition, with zero tolerance for contamination or oxidation
Uniform and stable microstructure, free from defects such as cracks, gas porosity, or shrinkage
To meet these stringent requirements, stainless steel investment casting is one of the few manufacturing technologies capable of combining design freedom with exceptional precision—a level that conventional machining alone is often unable to achieve.
2. Kobayashi Casting’s Experience and Capabilities in Medical Stainless Steel Casting
With more than 20 years of experience in precision stainless steel casting, Kobayashi Vietnam is among the few manufacturers in Vietnam offering end-to-end capabilities, from design and investment casting to alloy control and precision finishing.
Japanese-standard investment casting process
Full control from wax pattern to alloy quality
Wax patterns are produced using automatic wax injection machines and regularly verified with 3D CMM measurement to ensure dimensional accuracy
Ceramic shells are formed and cured in automatically controlled temperature and humidity environments, ensuring shell stability, smooth casting surfaces, and crack prevention
Prior to pouring, stainless steel melts are analyzed using AMETEK SPECTROMAXx optical emission spectrometers (Germany) to verify compliance with SUS304 / SUS316L specifications
Casting is performed using modern induction furnaces, followed by high-precision CNC machining (Mazak, Okuma) and thorough pressure and surface inspections before delivery
3. Kobayashi Casting – A Reliable Partner for Medical Manufacturing
From wax injection and shell building to alloy analysis and final machining, Kobayashi Vietnam operates a closed-loop, precise, and clean production system, ensuring consistent quality and long-term reliability for every component.
Kobayashi’s stainless steel cast products are widely used in:
Surgical instruments and implant devices
Stainless steel valves, connectors, and fittings for diagnostic equipment and biomedical pumps
Precision components for medical robotics and measurement systems
